Other day at Bombay central railway station
when Rajdhani Express train arrived from Delhi
(Rajdhani Express train by far is the most prestigious train in the fleet of Indian
Railways) a lady alighted from air conditioned coach and engaged a coolie. She
inquired whether she could get a wheel chair for her co-passenger, an aged and infirm
man.Coolie unruffled and cool as cucumber indicating towards his push-cart
(hath-thela) suggested “sit on this itself” They were perplexed, to say the
least. Man preferred to drag himself by and by towards the Exit with the help
of a walking stick, he was carrying.
High time we introduced a HELP LINE so that a passenger requiring
ambulance/stretcher or wheel chair could book/request for one at a fix rate.
Passenger does not mind paying, he does mind the way he is treated. As in this
case coolie just made him feel that he was no better than a luggage piece.
P.S.
Railway does have wheel chair and stretcher at railway stations but
less said better it is.
